SUMMARY

Insight-oriented, client-centered group therapy can contribute to individuals' well-being. The tension inherent in the existential dilemma revolving around autonomy and connection is more clearly understood and there is more opportunity for insight and experience than in individual psychotherapy. The neurotic styles of interaction involving fusion and/or isolation become visible again and again in the intensive interactions with group members, therapists and within the group as a whole. These confrontations can lead to insight, catharsis and new behavior. Group therapy thus provides corrective emotional experiences which result in more contact with oneself and with others.
