Psychotherapy in clients with limited opportunities: a plea for a respectful treatment of mental suffering

ARTICLEBosmans, Erwin - 44–4 (2006)

SUMMARY

For those clients with limited opportunities in society, there exists a 'transgenerational poverty'. This not only consists of a visible and financial component, but also of poverty on an emotional, cognitive and communicative level. The goal of psychotherapy is to create some movement in this situation, in order to enable the client to grow and develop himself within a safe therapeutic relation. In this article we describe the concept of 'containment' as a psychotherapeutic attitude, and as a technique in working with clients with limited opportunities. The description of an ongoing case will be used to clarify the theoretical background.
