In The Netherlands the field of postgraduate training in clinical psychology and psychotherapy is in a state of flux. Developments in teaching in general call for competency-based training. This is on the one hand a didactic concept. Central is the clinical practice, for which we train professionals. Essentially the trainee guides his own learning process. The teacher is his coach. On the other hand competencies are formulated as a basis for assessment. Part of this is evidence-based treatment, focusing on complaints. There is a tension with experience based, self-guided learning. This article is the result of reflection on this tension. It consists of three parts. The first part reviews the significance of the competence-based framework for the training of clinical psychologists and psychotherapists. It reflects on the opportunities and the risks of this development. In the second part a vision is formulated for a professional training that leads to an in the person integrated practice.
This includes a vision on assessment of the trainee. In the third part this vision is worked out for the training in client-centered psychotherapy. The proces-experiential approach is central, because her effectiveness is evidence-based.
