Four years ago, a routine process monitoring project was adopted by the Sinai Centre, Jewish Mental Health Services, the Netherlands. In this project, brief standardised session satisfaction and outcome rating scales are completed by the patient and the therapist at a session-by-session base. Individual treatment processes are tracked by the graphical plotting of (changes in) satisfaction scores over the course of treatment, supplemented by simple regression analyses. Patient and therapist receive regular graphic feedback. The project is intended to optimise the therapeutic process by routinely attending patients and therapists to potential therapeutic impasses or alliance problems, reducing the risk of treatment failure or dropping out. Some possibilities and problems of this feedback system are discussed, illustrated by two case presentations.
