In this article we try to better understand destructive patterns, and advance a way to deal
with these experientially. We start with what Rogers and May have left us regarding this
theme. We then oppose aggression with destruction. We sharpen our notion of destructive
patterns through case material and research in developmental psychology. Realizing that the
therapeutic relationship will be the healing factor for our clients as well, we look for ways to
relate to the healthy, as well as to the hurt and the darker side of the client. Acknowledging
that all these parts have the right to exist will enhance the integration of their experiential
content. Psychotherapy in this sense is mainly a matter of establishing connections.
