Unexplained is unloved: dealing with unexplained physical complaints in a group setting

ARTICLEKaufmann, Chaja - 49–1 (2011)

SUMMARY

In this article, the process of working with psychosomatic clients is discussed from an attachment
perspective. When the genesis of unexplained physical complaints is understood
from attachment theory and a disturbed mentalization process, it will be necessary to structure
the treatment in a specific way. Body mentalization can be stimulated by a client-centered
individual approach, as well as by working in groups, and working with both verbal and
non-verbal offers. This will be explained by case examples.
