In this article, suicidality is seen as the possible expression of a client’s felt powerlessness. This feeling of powerlessness co-determines the interaction. Some aspects contributing to the interaction between a suicidal client and a mental health care professional are discussed, and factors that may influence the course of the communication are explored. It is shown that the level of intimacy to be reached between client and mental health care professional can play a determining role.
