Two birds in the bush are worth one in the hand. On the false opposition between attachment and letting go

ARTICLELibbrecht, Hilde - 50–3 (2012)

SUMMARY

Just like attachment will develop at the instance an infant starts to realize that it can lose its
mother, the realization of potential loss and finality offers an incomparable intensity to our
lives that is unique to our species. The fear that also is evoked can be in the way of attachment,
however, it can lead to mock-attachment, de-attachment or renouncement. Like the
ant in the fable, we can anxiously go about to stock up for the winter, or, like the cricket, enjoy
ourselves superficially without a single care in the world. But our unique human consciousness
offers us the opportunity to be ant and cricket at the same time…
