After a phenomenological sketch of individuals with personality disorders in general, the
author focuses on the narcissistic personality disorder. Contrary to those who seek help from
a perspective of felt incongruence, individuals with personality disorders will present with
questions that are extrinsically, rather than intrinsically motivated, resulting in different treatment paths. Phenomenology of the narcissistic personality disorder and theories on narcissism are discussed, specifically from a psychoanalytic perspective. Next, a client-centered treatment of the narcissistic client is discussed; a balancing act in seeking openings for self-exploration, alongside help with surviving and the appropriate dose of empathy, to come to a better, more livable and less fragile equilibrium. Finally, some case work is discussed.
