SUMMARY

In order to understand the persistence of marital problems, developmental, existential and systemic approaches are integrated. Therapy for couples can be considered as a way of dealing with the intrinsic dynamics between partners. The dynamic is understood as a way in which partners are primarely bent on maintaining their self-esteem. The therapist can help couples in distress by finding a way to reveal and accept their affected self-esteem.
