Receptiveness and self-compassion; the regulation of anxiety in the therapeutic relationship

ARTICLEHellemans, Joke - 42–3 (2004)

SUMMARY

In this article we describe how a lack of receptiveness and self-compassion in the client can play a part in a therapeutic process that got stuck. Especially receptiveness in the therapeutic relation is a necessary condition to be able to change disturbed self- and object-representations. In her Short Term Anxiety-regulating Psychotherapy, Leigh McCullough describes some anxiety regulating techniques in the therapeutic relation that can help to increase receptiveness and self-compassion. This improves the therapeutic work relation and enables interventions to reach the client. Trough a case study we describe a couple of techniques to reach this goal.
