Focussing on traumatic attachment in therapy

ARTICLEHardon, Bea, & Baljon, Marijke - 41–3 (2003)

SUMMARY

The "Balans", part of the mental health care institution "GGZ Drenthe", is an outpatient department for women with psychiatric problems connected to chronic traumatisation during youth. Treatment is based on insights derived from the dissociation model and the attachment theory. According to the theory described in this essay, a history of childhood neglect in combination with trauma can lead to psycho-physiological changes and disorganised attachment. This style attachment predisposes to dissociation and to the development of a multiple internal working model. The essay describes how these insights are applied in outpatient treatment in order to develop a safer attachment pattern, a greater capacity for self-reflection, and a healthier coping style based on increased self-awareness.
