Attachment and forensic psychotherapy: the importance of relevance and commitment in short-term taskoriented therapies

ARTICLETervoort, Martin G.A. - 39–4 (2001)

SUMMARY

With respect of clients of forensic psychiatry, they often is insufficient attachment, even after years of psychotherapy.
Besides, attachment to the therapist will not guarantee a change of the behaviour after the therapy.
Practical and concrete goals, focussed on daily spending, training of proficiency and decreasing of recidive are often more important during short(-term) therapeutic contacts, than focussing on attachment or different styles of attachment.
Therefore the attachmenttheory is of relative value when we talk about short-term therapies or therapy focussed on tasks.
To achieve a successful psychotherapy treatment, a positive working-relationship is needed.
Relevancy of the therapist towards the client and commitment of the client towards the therapeutic task are therefore important conditions.
To achieve this, the therapist uses his personal qualities as well as his technical skills.
