The in-between: Contemplations on the relation between art and therapy

ARTICLEKalverboer, Alex Fedde - 43–1 (2005)

SUMMARY

The in-between, inspirations from art and daily life. After positioning myself as a scientist and an artist, I briefly question the way we take our daily interpretations for granted; they are not free from prejudice. This brings me to the theme of the 'in-between'' as it occurs in daily life, art, and behavioral science. How unbiased are our perceptions and our judgments?
A clear parallel can be drawn between the processes that are involved in the encounter between therapist and client and those that play a part in the creation of a work of art. I tackle the problem of figure and background through the use of musical fragments and the making of an aquarelle. What is the primate, how does it build, and why is painting a portrait so exceptionally hard? The role of theory in the therapeutic process is to a certain degree comparable with technique in art. What role does our common sense or our intuition play in the therapeutic process? Is it not unavoidable to be eclectic? Core-questions for therapist and artist alike: 'What are we after?' and 'How do we see with our own eyes?'
