Brief phased client-centered psychotherapy

ARTICLEEvers, Rob - 43–4 (2005)

SUMMARY

In times where brief cognitive behaviour therapy rules, and the Dutch government has limited the number of psychotherapy sessions to 25 (for personality disorders to 50), client-centered psychotherapy is facing a new challenge.
In this paper some creative solutions will be suggested to meet this challenge.
The starting point in psychotherapy should be the motivational stage in the phase in the process of the client, and not the theoretical or psychotherapeutic preferences of the therapist. The frequency of the sessions and the content of the therapy can be negotiated depending on which stage the client is experiencing.
Treatment should not only be focused on the therapy process in the treatment room, but should also have an eye for the overall situation of the client, and for social influences.
The therapist can help the client to translate the outcome of the sessions to daily life. Sources of other therapyschools can be used as well as information on the internet or client societies.
